“Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving by many or by few!”
“Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving by many or by few.” 1 Samuel 14:6. When thinking about the new Reformed Presbyterian church plant in Edinburgh this is a good verse to have carved into your heart and mind.
If someone with a knowledge of current church growth thinking were to analyse the RP Church plant in Edinburgh, they’d probably say: ‘You don’t stand much of a chance!’ What do you think you can do with one couple in their thirties and a handful of students? Four people, if you want to define i
t in terms of committed ‘card carrying’ RP’s. In human terms it’s ridiculous.
But then it wouldn’t be the first that someone has said that to us in the Scottish RP Church in recent years. In fact it has been said quite often, or at least it seems like that. And in truth, in every one of those instances they have been right, because in ‘human terms’ what we have set out to do sometimes has simply been ridiculous.
The issue though is simple. It’s about getting our head round the fact that it doesn’t matter about ‘human terms’. If it was about ‘human terms’, we wouldn’t bother getting out of our beds in the morning. If it was about ‘human terms’, we’d pack it all in now. If it was about ‘human terms’, we’d just walk away and let the doubt casters have their way. But we don’t! Why not? Because we know that this is the LORD’s work! It’s the LORD’s Word that we proclaim. It is with the LORD that we plead in prayer.
When Jonathan said to the young man who carried his armour, “Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that the LORD will work for us, for nothing can hinder the LORD from saving by many or by few,” he wasn’t being reckless, he was simply saying, ‘Let’s go out and see what the LORD will do today, for his people and for His glory.’
Please give thanks that God has given us the use of a fantastic building, in a very prominent location, at an unbelievably cost effective price. No one needs to tell us that it’s going to be hard. Even a cursory reading of the lives of men like Moses, Joshua, Jeremiah, Paul etc. will tell you that it’s a long, hard, brutal slog. But we slog on with expectant anticipation. Why? Because we have been amazingly chosen and appointed to go and bear fruit, much good fruit for the Father’s glory.
Please pray that God will bring the organising pastor of His choosing and no one else to lead this church plant.
Please pray that God will save many people, and that they will be discipled to love Him, delight in Him as their Lord, and establish covenant homes.
